Off the Record: Joe Waller

Off the Record is a new series where we look behind the decks at the party starters. The DJs channelling the energy of their city straight into the Permit Room. You’ve probably danced to them already. Now it’s time to really meet them.

There’s that feeling before a DJ set starts. The anticipation. We know it well at Permit Room. Every Thursday, our local resident DJs take over – spinning everything from funk, punk and hip-hop, to Bollywood, disco and soul.

Meet Cambridge Permit Room DJ Joe Waller. Founder of Rebirth Radio – a platform for vinyl-only mixes and shows. Every week, he sets the mood and gets toes tapping. Now he shares his ultimate festival line-up and the song he’s always queuing.

Tell us something Off the Record…

Years ago, I was involved in the free party scene, all over the UK and Europe, throwing parties for the masses.

Go-to floor filler that never fails?

Always a staple part of my record bag – Bill Withers ‘Lovely Day’.

If the Permit Room was a track, what would it sound like?

El Michels Affair, ‘Cham Cham’. It is Permit Room. Bombay Beats. It's a vibe.

Three dream festival headliners (dead or alive)?

Bob Marley, David Bowie and DJ Randall – I'd do anything to see him on turntables again.

Where might we find you when you’re not spinning at Permit Room?

You can find me in the Rebirth Radio studio or DJing at festivals and events in the UK and Europe soon.
