Permit Room | Off the Record

Journal

Off the Record: Rohan Rahkit

Off the Record is a new series where we look behind the decks at the party starters. The DJs channelling the energy of their city straight into the Permit Room. You’ve probably danced to them already. Now it’s time to really meet them.

There’s that feeling before a DJ set starts. The anticipation. We know it well at Permit Room. Every Thursday, our local resident DJs take over – spinning everything from funk, punk and hip-hop, to Bollywood, disco and soul.

Off the Record is a series where we look behind the decks at the party starters. The DJs channelling the energy of their city straight into the Permit Room. You’ve probably danced to them already. Now it’s time to really meet them.

Stepping into the spotlight this time, it's DJ, broadcaster and actor Rohan Rahkit. Curator of Portobello Road’s weekly deck spinners. A bold voice in electronic music and part of the South Asian underground collective, Daytimers. Get to know him – his fail-safe anthems, upcoming moves and cocktails of choice.

  • Tell us something ‘off the record’… My name has been misspelt on line-ups more than it's been correctly spelt.
  • Go-to floor filler that never fails? Amy Winehouse's In My Bed, but the Bugs in the Attic remix. Good stuff.
  • If Permit Room was a track, what would it sound like? Dancing Drums by the amazing Ananda Shankar. That like ’70s, psyche, sitar-based music… *chefs kiss*
  • Three dream festival headliners (dead or alive)? In no particular order, Prince, Ron Trent and Bombay Bicycle Club. It's a festival for everyone, do you know what I mean?
  • Where might we find you when you’re not spinning at Permit Room? Playing all over London, Europe, and, as of November and December, touring India and Sri Lanka. So come along.
  • Favourite Permit Room cocktail while spinning? The Negroni and, of course… the Clover Club.
