Off the Record: Sophie Lloyd

Off the Record is a new series where we look behind the decks at the party starters. The DJs channelling the energy of their city straight into the Permit Room. You’ve probably danced to them already. Now it’s time to really meet them.

There’s that feeling before a DJ set starts. The anticipation. We know it well at Permit Room. Every Thursday, our local resident DJs take over – spinning everything from funk, punk and hip-hop, to Bollywood, disco and soul.

First up: Brighton’s own Sophie Lloyd. Two decades in the game, she’s lit up festivals and clubs worldwide, sharing stages with Mark Ronson, Horse Meat Disco and Purple Disco Machine. Get to know her – over a chai, or something stronger.

  • Tell us something off the record…I have just done a rework of a record from a ‘90s boy band.
  • Go-to floor filler that never fails? Very self-indulgently, it's my own track, which is Calling Out (featuring Dames Brown). It never fails to get people's hands in the air and on the dance floor.
  • If the Permit Room were a track, what would it sound like? A Taste of Honey by World Spin – a track that I play pretty much every time that I'm here.
  • Three dream festival headliners (dead or alive)? Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix… Oh, and Daft Punk performing their Homework album.
  • Where might we find you when you’re not spinning at Permit Room Playing Ibiza, London, all around Europe. Playing at various clubs and festivals – everywhere really!
  • Favourite Permit Room cocktail while spinning? All of them *giggle*
